| Abstract: |
Objective: To evaluate the Federal Communications Commission’s claim that new technologies have increased the diversity of available children's programming. Availability and content of children’s broadcast and cable TV programs in one community are described.
Design: Phone interview by trained interviewers. 100-item questionnaire.
Subjects and Setting: Random digit dialing sample survey of 3,500 numbers. 213 households with children under the age of 12 from Champaign-Urbana IL (mostly white, highly educated, 2-parent households) completed the interview.
Intervention(s): N/A
Outcome Measure(s): Media available in the home, children’s use of different media, variety and diversity of children’s media use, and parent’s evaluation of child’s media use.
Results: More than two thirds of the sample owned cable TV and owned a VCR. Diversity of programming content was highest with cable programming; however, over-the-air broadcasting and VCR’s offer little diversity in children's content.
Conclusions: The results seem to indicate that variety and diversity in programming choices are only available to those that can afford cable TV. © Center on Media and Child Health |
