Researchers wanted to see how having soap operas playing in the background affected students' homework performance and time. In an experiment where 192 eighth graders were given assignments to complete, some were put in rooms where new episodes of a soap opera were playing in the background, some where old episodes were playing, some where only audio was playing, and some where nothing was playing.
Researchers found that students who did homework with old or new episodes of a soap opera on TV did not do as well and took more time than students who either did their homework in silence or who only listened to the audio of a soap opera. They recommend that students avoid watching soap operas on television while they do their homework. © Center on Media and Child Health
