Center on Media and Child Health Monthly

Bickham2 (2)Meet:

How long have you
been at the Center?
I have been at the Center since September 2004.

What do you do at the
I am a Research Scientist.

What is one of your
current CMCH projects?
Currently we are exploring the link betweenmedia use and issues of mental health
including depression and anxiety.

What is one way you
like to use media creatively
? I enjoy Geocaching which is a combination of
hiking and treasure hunting using GPS. Smartphones can act as the GPS to find
the cache and then allow you to post comments and pictures and track your
successful finds online while still out in the woods. Now if there was just an
app that checked for ticks…

What is one of your
favorite TV shows
, and why? Buffy the Vampire Slayer is one of my favorite TV shows. I really enjoy their overall conceit of
adolescent turmoil represented as various types of monsters.  It’s been
copied so many times it is almost a cliché at this point. The show contains a
lot of violence, so it isn’t appropriate for everyone.
The show can, however, lead to an open conversation with children
or students about what it means that heroes on TV and in the
movies tend to perform more violent acts than villains.
