Four families have sued MySpace, the social networking website, after their daughters were abused by people they met through the site.  The parents are disappointed that the site did not establish safety measures for their younger users earlier than they did.  Recently however, MySpace has launched partnerships with law enforcement and started efforts to educate users about Internet safety.

CMCH has partnered with the Internet Safety Coalition, an organization that teaches basic rules of Internet safety to parents and children.  Their website, iKeepSafe.org, offers instructional videos and step-by-step guides for parents, along with interactive and educational games for kids.

See research about effects of the Internet on children’s health and safety from the CMCH Database of Research.

Being a parent is so much harder than it used to be. I constantly struggle with the balance of watching out for my kids when they go online.
