Early users of Nintendo’s new Wii game system were surprised by sore muscles after playing hours of sports video games.  The control for the system looks like a typical TV remote-control, but responds to motion, such as swinging a bat or boxing against an opponent.  The system comes with a package of 5 sports games: bowling, golf, baseball, tennis and boxing.  Many users are reporting soreness after hours of play, indicating that they are using muscles they don’t typically use.

While this has positive possibilities for kids using media to exercise, the Wii remote control is also used as a weapon in other games.  It can function as a sword or as a gun.  That’s the thing with media; it isn’t inherently good or bad — it’s all in how it’s used…
