A Norwegian study in the June issue of Diabetes Care found that children with Type I Diabetes who spent more time watching TV had a higher level of blood sugar than those who watched less.

While Type 2 Diabetes is associated with obesity, the Type I Diabetes studied here is caused by an inability of the body to create insulin.  People with Type I Diabetes must monitor their blood sugar levels daily and perform insulin injections.

Blood sugar levels can increase because of snacking, overeating, or insufficient physical activity, all of which may be associated with extended television viewing.  Conversely, children who have Type I Diabetes may be too sick to do more activity than watch television.  This study does not show the causal direction.
